Rafting the American River, California
Irrespective of whether you are looking forward to a relaxing whitewater rafting trip with your loved ones, or are in search of exciting rafting experiences you will cherish for years afterwards, the rivers of California provide you a variety of rafting options to choose from. Among the rest, the American River, situated close to the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area, is one of the most popular rafting destinations the state has on offer. Subdivided into three sections- the North fork, Middle Fork and South fork, the American river can be conveniently reached from the nearby Lake Tahoe areas both in quick daytrips and in short overnight adventures.
Characterized primarily by Class II and III rapids, the South Fork section of the American River is the best place to start river rafting experiences for first time rafters. Rafting along the comparatively gentler ripples of the South Fork whitewaters, you can enjoy the picturesque foothills, peaceful landscape and narrow rocky gorges passing along. With over 50 Class II and III rapids, the South Fork is further subdivided into the Upper Chili Bar Run and the Lower Gorge Run. Whereas, the Chili Bar Run is 9 miles in length and offers an exciting trip through the Meat Grinder and Trouble Maker, the Lower Run is 12 miles long and offers adventurous rafters rapids such as the Fowlers Rock, Hospital Bar and Satan’s Cesspool. In comparison, the Middle Fork section is more suitable for experienced rafters in good physical shape and of more athletic disposition.
