The 230 kilometer long Madawaska River of Ontario, Canada draws its headwaters from its Source Lake in the Algonquin Park highlands and drains off in the Ottawa River. The name Madawaska is derived from the region Matouweskarini, which means “people of the shallows”.
Two sections of the river - Upper and Lower Madawaska Provincial Parks, which are ideal for whitewater rafting, are accorded the status of provincial waterway parks and are administered by the Ontario Parks. The Madawaska River is the perfect spot for learning whitewater rafting. The river with a regular supply of dam waters is quite reliable. A large number of alternating rapids and pools gives beginners’ ample time to rest, before they jump on to another thrilling technical rapid. The rapids range from Class I-IV action levels, the popular ones being Staircase, Chalet, Gravelpit, Cottage and Claudia’s Roller range.
The rafting trail also includes some cozy sandy beaches, hiking trails and excellent fishing opportunities. The river also caters to canoers and kayakers. The stretch is very popular among families who want to taste the sheer thrill of whitewaters in a relatively safe environment.
