White Water Rafting Rivers of the World - New York USA

Rafting the Black River Canyon of New York

The Black River Canyon of New York is situated in the city of Watertown and is one of the most sought after urban rafting spots in the US. The river flows between the 140 feet deep canyon made up of ancient shale and limestone.

The 8-mile long section of the Black River between Farr Road and Enos section features rapids of Class I-V. The initial stretch is filled with Class II warm up rapids before adventurers face the technical challenge of Class IV+ Knife’s Edge. After this grueling test of navigation skills, Class II rapids follow until a renewed sense of adventure with the Glen Park Falls and several more Class III-IV rapids. The final phase of the trip before culminating into the Lake Ontario demands deft hands to row across Three Rocks, Panic Rock, Cruncher, Rocket Ride, Square Rock and a lot more Class III-IV rapids. The sheer force of the river is not easy to handle by the beginners. For Black River rafting, the minimum age required is 16 years since its not easy to navigate the aggressive hydraulics of 14 sets of rapids in mere 8 miles.

The beautiful landscapes of the Herkimer County and the Adirondack Mountains deserve admiration. The summer trips with an intensity of Class I-III are the perfect getaway for families and bigger groups. The summer brings in excellent opportunities for fishing- salmon, trout and pike! The warm waters are perfect for swimming and water fights. Another relaxing summer activity in the Black Canyon is sunbathing.

The Niagara and Mohawk dams control water releases throughout summer. The combination of gentle waters, soothing weather and exciting fun trips make the Black River a desired summer escape.
